What
We Have
There are lists on nearly every Soay web site about
what you should have and how you should use it. Please, for your own sanity, remember
that every farm is different, and different flock owners have different management
styles and interests. Your farm, your sheep, your management style should be tailored
to what you feel is important.
We
believe in minimal intervention so this is what we have on hand:
- Benzathine
Penicillin - Long acting antibiotic - lasts 48 hours.
- Liquamycin
- a broad spectrum antibiotic in the tetracycline family. Primarily used for pneumonia.
We have never used it but our vet suggested we keep it on hand.
- Terramycin
Eye Ointment - Antibiotic salve for eye infections.
- Sterile
needles & syringes - We use Kendall Monoject Veterinary Luer Lock Syringes
with Needles: 3cc, size 20, 3/4 inches long.
- Playtex
nursing bottle & liners.
- Lamb
replacement milk - replaced yearly - we buy it every year and have never had a
lamb rejected or abandoned. We take the old, outdated milk and put it in the vegetable
garden. We keep it on hand because if we don't have it - we'll need it.
- Nursemate
& Life Line Colostrum Supplement - These are supplements not replacements
- follow label directions. If ewe colostrum is not available the Nursemate is
a good choice.
- Baby
Lamb Strength - Oral Nutritional Supplement For Lambs - Contains vitamins A, D
& E - used at birth, for stressed lambs, and at weaning.
- Pro-Bios
Gel - like yogurt for livestock. Helps kick start the rumen.
- A
liquids syringe - for giving oral medications, or re-hydrating fluids.
- Betadine
Iodine Solution for umbilical care.
- Digital
thermometer.
- Hoof
Trimmer
- CDT
Immunization Liquid - for protection against Clostridium perfringens Types c &
D(Enterotoxemia) and Clostridum tetani(Tetanus)
- Covexin-8
Immunization Liquid - for protection against diseases caused by Cl. chauvoei,
Cl. septicum, Cl. novyi Type B, Cl. haemolyticum (known also as Cl. novyi Type
D), Cl. tetani and Cl. perfringens Types C and D.
We
used to keep an injectable wormer on hand. After we lost a lamb to flock master
error or an allergic reaction to the chemical wormer we have switched to biological
controls using garlic and herbs.
Where
We Get It
Farmstead
Health Supply - Restore and Sustain organic parasite controls.
Pipestone
Vet Supply - Nursemate, Life Line, Baby Lamb Strength, Penicillin,
Liquamycin, Covexin, liquids syringe, and hoof trimmer.
Dirt
Works - Diatomaceous Earth - Natural parasite control.
Garlic
Barrier Liquid Garlic - Liquid garlic juice - full strength - only
available full strength in the gallon size. S.A.R.E - USDA sponsored study results
on garlic deworming of sheep found that pharmaceuticals used for deworming in
sheep are becoming less effective because the worms are developing immunity to
the chemicals. Garlic juice in a ratio of 1/6 of an ounce of juice mixed with
1 ounce of water, six times a year would bring most worms under control. Read
complete study here.
Everything
else we get at our local farm store.
