Wind River Soay Sheep Farm... continued

We have worked to build our British flock with great diversity. Our ewes represent the genetics of all the founding Soay matriarchs, and our rams have been selected with the same care.

Our British flock of seventeen is comprised of dark phase, light phase, tans, and white spotted sheep. Jack, our ram from Virginia Vaughn's South Carolina flock, is especially beautiful with long curling wool. We also have Blue Mountain Galahad - son of the now deceased Eugene that stole my heart. Blake, pictured at the left, is also a son of Eugene and has his striking attributes of a full beard and exceptionally full mane and is gorgeous in his winter wool. Blake is an alpha ram in our American flock. We also have six other British rams: two from the tan Shasta, two from tan Exel, and two that may be carrying white spotting - all from Southern Oregon Soay. With eight British rams we maintain diversity in our breeding groups.

We have also put equal effort into building an American flock, which is as diverse as our British flock. We have twenty-five blacks, browns, tans, polled, scurred and fully horned American Soay. We even have a self colored chocolate ewe! Some of our American Soay were selected for their abundant wool, some for their color or genetics, some for their size. The chocolate ewe Snickers, and her half brother Avenger are both from tan Red Deer. Snickers was bred last fall to a ram that gives us the best potential at another self colored chocolate. Tan Avenger also had a breeding pod of ewes that included a mahogany, black, tan, and a tan carrier ewe.

We are a small caring farm, invested in providing quality breeding stock and working to help others get their flocks off to a good start. We've been told by several long long time flock owners that our Soay are the friendliest they've ever been around. Because we live in close proximity to our sheep, and are moving around them all the time they are not as skittish around strangers as most Soay are. Most of our sheep will come to the fence to eat from our hands, and many will climb into our laps when we go in to feed "treats". We do not encourage this behavior in any of our rams, and even though they are also friendlier than others we never let our guard down when working with the rams.

Our Soay sheep have become a valued part of our lives. Is it convenient to have over 40 sheep during the summer months when we want to take off to the San Juans for a week? No. Is it easy to stay ahead of those hungry mouths by getting more of our acreage fenced, seeded and ready for them? No. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
