Soay Sheep
at Wind River Farm

We have British and American Soay. Though housed together the British ewes are bred only to British rams, and many of the American ewes are bred to American rams. Occasionally we will put an American ewe to a British ram in an effort to achieve a refinement of characteristics carried by both.

We have several polled and scurred Soay, like Caroline in the picture to the upper left. Caroline is polled - meaning she has no horns at all. Devon, pictured below Caroline, is scurred. She did not sprout horn buds until she was about eight months old and now sports two tiny inch long horns. Devon's dam - Cashmere - is scurred and is pictured below Devon.

The pictures to the right show three different kinds of horns that ewes may have - though they are all different and there are many other shapes.

American Soay are typically larger than British Soay but they are very similar in temperment.
