When to Breed Your Soay Sheep

The breeding groups are generally put together sometime between middle of September and first of November, and are broken apart sometime between middle of December and first of February. Generally.

You have a great deal of latitude with the management of the time your groups are together. If you have vacation planned for mid - May and will be away, plan to break your breeding groups up by mid-December. If you will be out of the country in March – you start your groups later so lambs don’t start coming until April.

We put our Soay in their breeding groups around October first, and generally break them up by middle of January. If we have a number of smaller, first year ewes in a breeding pod we may leave the breeding pod together a bit longer – breaking it up the first part of February to maximize the probability they will be covered. Our lambs are usually born between end of March and middle of May.

Remember, once the rams and ewes are in the breeding group together it will take them a week or so to adjust to one another, and settle down before the ewes and ram turn to the task at hand. The more stress there is in getting your breeder groups together the longer it takes for them to settle down.
