Antibiotics
& Wormers
We
do not use antibiotics as a routine maintenance process here at Wind River. We
always have penicillin and Liquamycin on hand as we will use them them in the
event of an emergency. You should consult with your Vet about which products to
keep on hand and the appropriate dosages.
We
are transitioning away from chemical wormers to natural control of parasites with
garlic products, pasture rotation, and other natural controls. Poor little Ness
- pictured at left - either had an allergic reaction or was inadvertently overdosed
and died as a reaction to the chemical wormers when he was 5 months old. Strong
motivation to double check your syringes, and to move to natural controls.
Several
times a week we mix 1 cup of sheep ration, 1 cup of orchard grass or timothy pellets,
and about 1 tablespoon each of garlic powder, diatomaceous earth, sheep minerals,
pumpkin seeds, chopped apples, and a bit of whatever else we have around that
the sheep like - except my day lilies which they love and I won't let them have.
We provide this mixture for EACH of our sheep, served in several areas around
their paddocks in rubber bowls so everyone gets some. So if there are 5 ewes it
would be 10 cups amended with all the extra goodies.
